EFFECTS+ - European research project on trust, security and privacy in the Future Internet
EFFECTS+ was a European research coordination project focused on trust, security, privacy and compliance in the context of the Future Internet. The project supported cooperation between European ICT research initiatives and helped organise knowledge exchange around digital trust, secure online services and privacy-aware technologies.
The full project title was European Framework for Future Internet - Compliance, Trust, Security and Privacy through effective clustering. The project was connected with European research activities in the ICT field and addressed the need to bring together related initiatives working on security, privacy and trust in emerging internet technologies.

What was EFFECTS+ about?
EFFECTS+ was not primarily a software product or a single technical platform. Its purpose was to support coordination between European research projects that were dealing with similar questions: how to make future internet services more secure, more trustworthy, more privacy-aware and more compliant with technical and legal requirements.
At the time, European research programmes were funding many initiatives related to networked services, digital identity, trust management, online security, privacy technologies and future internet architectures. EFFECTS+ helped create links between those efforts, so that results, challenges and research directions could be shared more effectively.
Why was this important?
The concept of the Future Internet was not limited to faster networks or new online platforms. It also included the social and technical conditions required for people, companies and public institutions to rely on digital services. Security, privacy and trust were therefore essential elements, not optional additions.
Without coordination, research projects can remain isolated. EFFECTS+ addressed this problem by promoting clustering - the grouping of related projects and communities around shared topics. This made it easier to compare approaches, avoid duplication and identify future research priorities.
Main themes
- Trust - building confidence in digital services and online interactions.
- Security - protecting systems, data and infrastructure from technical threats.
- Privacy - supporting technologies and practices that respect user data and autonomy.
- Compliance - aligning digital systems with rules, standards and responsible governance.
- Clustering - connecting related European research projects and expert communities.
Historical relevance
Many of the issues addressed by EFFECTS+ remain relevant today. Cloud computing, identity services, mobile applications, connected devices, data platforms and artificial intelligence all depend on trust, security and privacy. The project belongs to an earlier stage of European thinking about how digital innovation should be connected with responsible governance.
Although the project itself is historical, its themes are still present in current debates about cybersecurity, data protection, trusted digital infrastructure and the responsible design of online services.
